The Flying Bear

Unread postby tallycane » Mon Jul 29, 2013 9:58 pm

I just found out today my buddy who was one of the owners of The Red Elephant will be opening a new restaurant called The Flying Bear later this fall. It will be located in a new building that is being built off Thomasville Road right next to Coosh's Bayou Rouge. He says it will be a family friendly restaurant with good food using his 24 years of restaurant experience including Outback.

This is awesome man. I glad you could provide this scoop for us to add to the project page for Persimmon Hill. It feels like a good fit for that area and the name is certainly family-friendly. Is your friend offering any clues of what the menu will have? And do you think there is enough parking over there for a restaurant that does business similar to the Red Elephant or are we talking smaller scale?

Flying bear. Nice. More quality restaurants needed in this area.

He basically said the menu will be a reflection of his career over the last 24 years, I would imagine food similar to The Red Elephant or Rummy's Pizza but I am only speculating. I have no doubt it will be successful based on his past experience. On a side note, I also learned that Red Elephant will be opening a third location off Tennessee Street as a cafe similar to Newk's. It's less overhead for them at a third of the cost and space needed to run a full restaurant.

No opinion on the restaurant itself, but the name actually sounds like the name of an English pub to me, not a family-friendly restaurant.

Driving by I noticed that The Flying Bear has opened for business.  Has anyone been yet?

Also has Gigi's Cupcake (a chain) opened in that plaza or is it still coming?

Always enjoyed Tally life here even though at times it can frustrate me.  Getting more stores just means I don't have to do shopping out of town as often.  Now where's that H&M?

I had a chance to try the restaurant this weekend. I left feeling like this place was very similar to the Red Elephant. Took a few friends with me and they liked it. Service was fine, flavor - food quality was good, prices are borderline higher than I would have expected but portion sizes were good. The rocking chairs outside the front door were a nice touch!

The Flying Bear got a good write-up in the Democrat awhile back, but I haven't had a chance to try it yet. If you look at their facebook page, the avg. review is over 4.5 out of 5, with lots of 5-star reviews. The menu is bacon-rich and sounds right up my alley. The prices are a couple dollars high, imo, but the clientele they serve out on N. Thomasville Rd. expect to pay $11 for a good burger. I'm stopping in for lunch today and will provide more feedback afterwards.

OK, tried it and LOVE IT!!! Full disclosure, here, my buddy Brian Gibson and his brother Aaron own and operate the place, but it stands on it's own merit for sure!!! So far, I've had the Mac Attack Wrap and the Red Bear Melt. Both were freakin' delicious and filling, I have to say!!! Tasty grub, attentive and friendly staff (Bob the bartender is a PEACH!) and laid back, upscale-casual atmosphere. I recommend it.
