Airport Funfest & BBQ Challenge

PRESS RELEASE -- Community Invited to Airport Funfest & BBQ Challenge. To celebrate our hometown airport and help kick off the 2012 United Way campaign, the Tallahassee Regional Airport is hosting a special daylong family-friendly event on Saturday, October 1. The Airport Funfest & BBQ Challenge will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Compass Pointe facility located at 3256 Capital Circle SW (just west of the Ivan Munroe terminal). The event is free to the public and will feature a newly sanctioned Florida BBQ Competition, kids’ activities, live music performances, aircraft rides and displays, car displays, food and beverage concessions, arts and crafts and loads of family fun.
Attendees 18 years or older will have the chance to enter a drawing to win door prizes with net proceeds from the event benefitting the United Way of the Big Bend. The event, sponsored in part by Flightline Group, Inc., will allow the local and regional communities to become better informed about the Airport and its initiatives to improve customer service.

“The Airport Funfest is a part of the City’s annual United Way fundraiser, with the mission of inspiring local citizens to care for one another and build a more vibrant and connected community,” said Sunil Harman, Director of Aviation. Harman also noted the event is taking place to celebrate the Airport's role in being a key economic generator for Florida's capital city and the surrounding region.

The Airport has teamed with the Florida Bar-B-Que Association (FBA), a registered non-profit corporation, to promote and sanction the barbeque competition as a state-wide contest. The competition will bring together barbeque enthusiasts throughout Florida, Georgia and Alabama with various levels of barbeque cooking experience. FBA certified judges will judge four categories; chicken, brisket, ribs and pork. All categories will be judged based on appearance, taste and tenderness.

A “City Officials Choice Award” will be judged by City leaders alongside the certified judges, just for fun. Each City official will present one ribbon each to their favorite BBQ rib cook team. The “People’s Choice Award,” another ancillary competition, will be judged by event attendees for a $2 donation to the United Way of the Big Bend. All of the winners of the BBQ competition both certified and ancillary will be announced at the event.

The Florida A&M University Marching 100 band will be present to kick-off the day’s event. The Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA), Chapter 445, will be providing FREE introductory flights to students between the ages of 8 and 17 years. Local and regional food and beverage vendors will also be at the event selling barbeque, hamburgers, hotdogs, kettle corn, snow cones, ice cold drinks, adult beverages, arts & crafts and more!

"judges will judge four categories; chicken, brisket, ribs and pork. All categories will be judged based on appearance, taste and tenderness." Does anyone know how I can become a FBA certified judge! I hope they've got some BBQ for us regular folk to try!
