REVIEW: Yes, I know. Lucy & Leo's opened some time ago. Yes, I know they've been on the Food Network's Cupcake Wars. So why am I just now getting around to writing a review on them?
The answer to this question is rather complex, but mainly centers around two facts. 1.) The Cupcakes they sell are small. 2.) There's not enough of it left over for me to take a picture of after I gobble it up! It just happens that my girlfriend purchased one for me to bring to work for breakfast one morning and I happened to remember I needed to write a review on this place so I quickly snapped a picture of it before I popped this little goody in my mouth.
A co-worker and I have a thing for discovering local bakeries, and we just happened to be in Midtown one day and crossed over a neat looking sign with a Dog on it. She thought she saw the word Cake so she swerved into the parking lot to check it out. As we gazed at the door, we knew we had stumbled upon something new and exciting.
Walking into the bakery the offerings were on display on the other side of a glass panel that separated our faces from the food preparation area. Housed in a space much smaller than we were accustomed to, Lucy & Leo's Cupcakery shares a facility with a Boutique Collectable shop. Several times we had to step aside to allow others to pass along a narrow stretch of hallway that serves both businesses from the Thomasville Road side.
My co-worker ordered her standard, Red Velvet, I ordered Hummingbird just to be different. After taking a bite, my first impression was noticing how rich it was. This cupcake was very sweet. The second bite was even sweeter. Then I took note of a slight banana flavor that was baked into the cake. I don't have a preference for the Hummingbird recipe with Banana baked into it -- I'm used to apple, but my co-worker likes the banana mixture so I understood the reason for including it in the recipe.
Still not ready to write the review, I returned to Lucy & Leo's several times after this to try other flavors. I've had Key Lime, Blueberry Lemon, Carrot Cake, and Strawberry to mix it up. I enjoyed each cupcake, yet each time I recall thinking, "Gosh this thing is sweet!"
Time finally came for me to try the red velvet. I was actually on a tour bus riding around town on an evening where a presentation was being given on a proposed project for an existing downtown building. On the bus as refreshments they offered us Lucy & Leo's mini-cupcakes -- Red Velvet (smaller than the already small Lucy and Leo's standard size). I indulged. WHOO! This thing was so good I had to get another... and another. I said to myself, and perhaps someone sitting next to me, "This Red Velvet is their signature flavor".
Wrapping up, I am glad Tallahassee now has more bakeries to choose from especially one as ambitious as this one that made its way to National TV. I think stylistically there is no other bakery in town that prepares a cupcake the way Lucy & Leo's does. The flavor of nearly any choice is sure to leave a good taste in your mouth -- even if you find yourself feeling guilty because the thing is so darn sweet!
